SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. - More than 140 individuals from 50 organizations around the globe, including government and non-governmental agencies, combatant commands, industry and academia, attended the 2010 Interagency Logistics Symposium, June 9 to 11, here. U.S. Transportation Command's Joint Interagency Coordination Group hosts this biennial event to provide an opportunity for logistics experts and practitioners to address common issues and complex logistical challenges.

"Our objective with this symposium has been to establish a world-class venue for interagency coordination within the focused functional area of logistics," said Lance Carpenter, JIACG director. "The caliber of the speakers, and perhaps more importantly, the quality of the discussion among participants attest to the fact that this symposium was a resounding success. The symposium itself is not an end, but rather one of the means to realizing more innovative solutions to challenges faced by our collective interagency logistics community."

This year, the majority of the discussions and exercises addressed logistics related to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts, both actual and anticipated. Key presenters included representatives from the U.S. Agency for International Development Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance, U.S. Embassy in Haiti, U.S. Southern Command and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, who were on the ground in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in Haiti. They outlined their responsibilities, recapped challenges and successes, and envisioned opportunities for improved communication and better working relationships in future humanitarian relief efforts.

In addition, attendees participated in a supply chain modeling and simulation exercise using a shared workspace capability called Small Group Scenario Trainer. Attendees took on different roles representing various stakeholders and used SGST to plan, coordinate and execute a unified interagency/Department of Defense response to a disaster scenario borrowed from Military Sealift Command's SEALIFT 2010 exercise.

Those attending said symposium highlights included logistics presentations by Army Lt. Gen. Kathleen Gainey, director for logistics, Joint Staff, and retired Army Lt. Gen. Claude V. Christianson, senior director, National Defense University.

"The event was very informative and provided a unique opportunity to understand interagency challenges," said Adam Yearwood, assistant for sealift and mobility, Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense. "A key take-away is that we need to improve collaboration between all stakeholders."
