SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. - The Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command today assumed full oversight responsibility of the Defense Transportation Coordination Initiative contract from the U.S. Transportation Command.
Personnel, resources and management functions will be administered by SDDC's Strategic Business Directorate (G9).
The DTCI is a third-party logistics contract, currently awarded to Menlo Worldwide Government Services, and is responsible for managing DOD's Continental United States second-destination freight shipments. The contract was awarded to Menlo by USTRANSCOM in August 2007 and has a three-year base period and four one-year option periods.
"DTCI is a proven success and the program outcomes have exceeded our expectation," said Mel Holland, deputy chief of staff for Strategic Business. "SDDC hopes to build on this initial success as we assume responsibility for the program's functional execution."
Under SDDC, the DTCI office will continue to provide the required oversight of the contract and continue to manage daily operational activities. This transfer of responsibility will be transparent to current DTCI sites.
Menlo leverages current commercial capabilities and proven best transportation practices of commercial shippers with a large volume of DOD freight to achieve efficiencies in distribution and associated cost savings. To date, DTCI has realized approximately $158 million in gross cost avoidance.
SDDC is the Army service component commandf of USTRANSCOM and responsible for strategic surface transportation and distribution for the Department of Defense. With more than 4,500 people worldwide, SDDC's headquarters recently relocated to its new home at Scott Air Force Base completing the actions mandated by the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure actions.
