USTRANSCOM's Army component helps Santa

SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. - Military and civilian employees of the Army's Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command drew upon angels to brighten up the holiday season for 12 elementary school children.

The SDDC Angel Tree Program is a tradition the Army command adopted in 2007 when it relocated from three locations in Virginia and consolidated here.

Cutout angels are hung on the command's Christmas/Angel tree in the lobby of its headquarters building bearing the age, gender and school of each child selected. Command members picked an angel and donated a specially wrapped gift for that particular child.

"This year, two local elementary schools identified children who could use some extra Christmas cheer this season," said Christina Huckoby, manpower and program analyst in SDDC's Personnel and Logistics Directorate.

Children attending Delores Moye Elementary School, O'Fallon, and Kreitner Elementary School, Collinsville, received gifts from command members.

"Command members reached out to families in need at Kreitner School," said Vicki Reulecke, principal of Kreitner Elementary School. "As a result, many children will have a much brighter holiday season this year."

"We have always had a very good relationship with base personnel who have been mentors and volunteers in our school," said Paulette Burns, principal of Delores Moye Elementary School. "This is a generous extension of that relationship which provides a benefit for our children who need it the most."

SDDC is the Army Service Component Command of USTRANSCOM and responsible for strategic surface transportation and distribution for the Department of Defense. With more than 4,500 people worldwide, SDDC's headquarters recently relocated to its new home at Scott AFB completing the actions mandated by BRAC 2005.
