Secretary of Defense honors USTRANSCOM directorates

SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. - The U.S. Transportation Command received a visitor from the office of the Secretary of Defense in mid-January to honor personnel from the Intelligence Directorate, known as J-2, the Operations and Plans Directorate, or J-3, and the Command, Control, Communication and Computer Systems Directorate, or J-6, for superior service.

Robert Butler, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Cyber Policy, presented certificates of appreciation to many of the command's civilian and military personnel. He praised them for laying the foundation for developing the National Defense Strategy for Cyberspace Operations.

Butler said the combined expert insights of team members allowed scenario developers to establish proper context and provide current operational examples relevant to the senior leaders for a series of cyber tabletop exercises.

The group was instrumental in illuminating pressing cyber challenges to Defense Senior Leadership Conference participants through the exercises which helped senior leaders make high-level decisions.

The team members appreciated the recognition and gained greater understanding of the challenges ahead in the cyber environment. Butler led a day-long deep dive discussion prior to the recognition ceremony.

"For us, it was a big team effort. It was good to contribute to the betterment of the national cyber environment. The process continues and it's something we need to keep working on," said Steve Stone, J-2, senior analyst.

"It is an honor to be recognized with and serve as part of the world-class team that protects and defends USTRANSCOM's Distribution Process Owner systems and information. The collaboration and effectiveness of our combined team, comprised of J-2, J-3, J-6, and other staff elements, are key reasons for our continued success," said Mike Jenkins, J-6, information assurance officer.
