SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. – Gen. William M. Fraser III, commander, U.S. Transportation Command and members of the USTRANSCOM staff received high honors in the 2012 Defense Media Activity (DMA) Excellence in Journalism Awards Program.
“It is my pleasure to announce the winners of a competition (meant) to recognize outstanding achievement in furthering the objectives of the Department of Defense internal information program,” said Ray B. Shepherd, director, DMA.
The competition was open military and civilian employees assigned to joint and unified commands, DOD agencies, field activities and DMA components and subordinate units. Military members assigned to service units competed in their respective service's contest.
USTRANSCOM received the following awards in the DOD-wide competition:
- Outstanding Blog, First Place - Gen. William M. Fraser III, primary contributor, Lt. Gen Kathleen M. Gainey, deputy commander, Maj. Gen. Gregory E. Couch, chief of staff and Chief Master Sgt. Marty Klukas, senior enlisted leader
- Web Site, First Place - Bob Fehringer, Public Affairs photojournalist and primary contributor, Capt. Rick Haupt, chief, Public Affairs, Maj. James Lowe, Lt. Col. Andree Swanson, since retired, and Larry Vandergriff, webmaster
- Photojournalism, Second Place - Bob Fehringer, for “Non-lethal Weapons Directorate conducts training for USTRANSCOM”
- Civilian Print Journalist of the Year, Third Place - Bob Fehringer
“It’s nice to see them all recognized for their hard work,” said Army Maj. Matt Gregory, USTRANSCOM, deputy Public Affairs officer. “It’s a true testament of their professionalism and dedication to USTRANSCOM.”
According to Shepherd, a panel of volunteer judges reviewed and scored 135 print and broadcast entries from more than 10 organizations that competed in the contest.
First-place finishers at DMA will also go on to compete in the Thomas Jefferson "TJ" Awards Program. TJ award winners will be announced in April.
“Congratulations to the winners,” Shepherd said. “Thanks to our volunteer judges and all the organizations that participated in this year's DMA awards program.”
