SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. - U.S. Transportation Command is holding a Joint Task Force – Port Opening verification exercise Aug. 5 to 9 at MidAmerica Airport, Mascoutah, Ill.
The exercise will verify the ability of Air Force contingency response and Army rapid port opening forces to receive and distribute cargo to support humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations (simulated) at a civilian airport.
The exercise scenario focuses on initial military logistics response in the aftermath of an earthquake along the New Madrid fault zone. Civil authorities have asked the military for assistance in setting up the airport and distribution center for disaster aid. Other local airports are inoperable.
This unique port opening capability serves the nation well as the first element to deploy to open airport or seaports during times of emergency. JTF-PO forces provide vital assistance during both national and international emergencies, including domestic hurricane response or help to other nations.
USTRANSCOM will provide the command and control for about 100 airmen from the Kentucky Air National Guard’s 123rd Contingency Response Group and 45 soldiers from the 689th Rapid Port Opening Element, Fort Eustis, Va.
The exercise will involve increased flights at MidAmerica Airport during daylight hours, and is not expected to have an impact on normal operations.
