SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. – The U.S. Transportation Command’s volleyball team clinched the championship in the Scott Air Force Base Intramural Volleyball Tournament May 30 when it defeated Defense Information Systems Agency 27-26.
“DISA is an excellent team that gave us a run for our money during the semi-final and championship matches,” said Larry Woehl, USTRANSCOM team coach. “We went undefeated in the preseason tournament, 4-0, then finished the season and tournament with a 15-2 record.”
TRANSCOM’s team consists of civilian and military athletes from across the command.
“The year started with many old faces from last year,” Woehl said, “and we were fortunate that two big hitters (Lindsey Gray and Eric Meyer) joined the USTRANSCOM team to help overcome two years as runners up.
“During the season,” Woehl continued, “the team pulled together as we played through some tough games, and rise above several close losses to finish with an 11-2 record.”
According to Woehl, the season’s biggest challenges were presented by the DISA and Med Group 1 teams.
“Overall, passing was the name of the game this year,” Woehl said, “and the team brought it all together in the tournament to put together some great attacks and stellar defense.”
According to Woehl, Lawrence Wade and Raymond Angsioco showed the most improvement throughout the season, as they continued to pass and hit with more consistency and power.
“The team showed that they were the best by not dropping a game in the tournament to take the Championship trophy," Woehl said.
