SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (Sep. 23, 2022) – On Sept. 9, U.S. Transportation Command’s Commander Air Force Gen. Jacqueline Van Ovost proudly announced to the entire workforce that USTRANSCOM is the recipient of a special award – number 14 since the command’s formation 35 years ago.

Copies of the citations covering the previous 13 awards are displayed in the lobby area of USTRANSCOM’s headquarters building.

“Fleet and I wanted to share some great news! Our Headquarters, to include the Joint Enabling Capabilities Command (JECC) and Joint Transportation Reserve Unit (JTRU), was selected for the Joint Meritorious Unit Award (JMUA) for exceptionally meritorious service from Apr. April 1, 2019 to Oct. 15,2021 by the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff,” said Van Ovost. “This is the 14th such award for the command and is in recognition for your collective efforts in numerous activities ranging from sealift recapitalization to Defense Personal Property reform, to complex contingency operations including the largest airlift evacuation in our nation’s history.”

The JMUA is a U.S. military award that was established on June 4, 1981, by then-Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger and was implemented by Department of Defense Directive 1348.27 dated July 22, 1982. The Joint Meritorious Unit Award was made retroactive to Jan. 23, 1979.

The Joint Meritorious Unit Award is a ribbon, enclosed in a gold frame. Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard recipients wear a different, smaller frame than the Army. A small lapel pin is worn by civilians.

The ribbon is very similar in design to the Defense Superior Service Medal ribbon, indicative of the fact that the service performed would warrant the award of the medal to an individual. Subsequent decorations of the Joint Meritorious Unit Award are annotated with oak leaf clusters.

There is also a flag streamer which is attached to the unit or organizational flag with no lettering on the ribbon. USTRANSCOM will hold a ceremony in the future in which leadership will read the order and attach the streamer to the organizational flag.

This award applies to military and civilian, within JTRU, the JECC, and of course, all of us here at the headquarters of USTRANSCOM.

“From the very first award presented to the command in 1989 to today’s announcement, there has been ONE consistent theme – the men and women of this command always exceed expectations and produce exceptional results in support of the joint force and our nation’s global interests,” Van Ovost concluded.

USTRANSCOM exists as a warfighting combatant command to project and sustain military
power at a time and place of the nation’s choosing. Powered by dedicated men and women, we
underwrite the lethality of the Joint Force, we advance American interests around the globe, and
we provide our nation's leaders with strategic flexibility to select from multiple options, while
creating multiple dilemmas for our adversaries.
