SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. – Secretary of Defense, Lloyd J. Austin III announced today that President Biden has nominated Air Force Lieutenant General Randall Reed to the rank of general with his next assignment as Commander, U.S. Transportation Command.

Reed is currently serving as Deputy Commander, Air Mobility Command, at Scott AFB. Prior to that assignment he was Commander, Third Air Force, Ramstein Air Base, Germany.

Lt. Gen. Reed graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1989. He commanded a numbered air force, wing, two expeditionary operations groups, and a flying training squadron. Additionally, he held a variety of joint, headquarters, and base-level positions including assignments in strategic airlift, special operations air refueling, and joint logistics spanning Operation Desert Storm to Operation Allies Refuge. He also served as the Senior Defense Official and Defense Attaché, Ankara, Turkey. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Light Fighter Air Assault School and is a command pilot with more than 3,500 hours in the C-141B, KC-135R/T, B-1B, RC-135V/W, E-8C, C-130, C-5A, and C-5M aircraft.

Reed will succeed Air Force Gen. Jacqueline Van Ovost who has commanded USTRANSCOM since October 2021. The change of command date has not been announced. The President’s nomination must be approved by the Senate, which entails Reed testifying before the Senate Armed Services Committee. Following those steps, and confirmation by the Senate, a date will be announced for the change of command.

USTRANSCOM exists as a warfighting combatant command to project and sustain military power at a time and place of the nation’s choosing. Powered by dedicated men and women, TRANSCOM underwrites the lethality of the Joint Force, advances American interests around the globe, and provides our nation's leaders with strategic flexibility to select from multiple options, while creating multiple dilemmas for our adversaries.
