U.S. Transportation Command to celebrate Army's 225th birthday

SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (USTCNS) --- United States Transportation Command's Army element will celebrate the U.S. Army's 225th Birthday with a series of events next month it was announced here today.

Army personnel will stage a 5K Run/Walk and 10K Fun Run, host a formal dinner celebration, hold a golf tournament and conduct a birthday ceremony to commemorate the birthday.

The theme for this year's event is Birth of an Army, Birth of Freedom.

The first event is a 5K Run/Walk and 10K Fun Run on June 2. The event begins at 7:00 a.m. at the Scott AFB parade grounds.

There is an entry fee of $1 or $7 with a T-shirt order. T-shirts are available until May 26.

The event is open to Scott AFB active duty and reserve personnel, DOD civilians, retirees and family members. Register at the Army Cell, 1st Floor, building 1911. Call 256-5873 for more information.

A formal dinner is scheduled for June 2 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Scott Club. The menu items include a choice between London Broil and Chicken Cordon Bleu, with vegetarian meals available on request.

Cost for the dinner is $15 for E6/GS7 and below, $20 E7/GS9 and above, and $25 for officers. Dress is formal.

The golf tournament will begin at 12:30 p.m. on June 8 at the Cardinal Creek Golf Course. A $40 per person fee includes green fee, cart fee, and meal following the tournament. Participants have the chance to win a $10,000 cash prize for scoring a hole-in-one on 4 of the par 3 holes.

The Army element will host a birthday celebration in the Seay Auditorium June 14, 2000 at 10:30 a.m. The celebration marks the final event in the series of activities. Army Lt. Gen. Daniel G. Brown, deputy commander in chief of USTRANSCOM, will host the event. Members of USTRANSCOM are invited to attend and should be seated by 10:15 a.m. The event is scheduled for 40 minutes and will include a special video based on this year's theme, and other events that illustrate the rich history of America's Army.
