Coast Guard anniversary - 4 August 1790

SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (USTCNS) --- On August 4th the U.S. Coast Guard celebrates its 210th anniversary. In 1790, Congress authorized "ten boats" establishing the Revenue Marine, marking the beginning of the U.S. Coast Guard. Renamed the Revenue Cutter Service, the organization combined with the Lifesaving Service in 1915 and officially adopted the name U.S. Coast Guard. In 1939, the former Lighthouse Service was integrated into the Coast Guard followed in 1946 by the Bureau of Marine Inspection and Navigation (which itself was formed by the combining of the Bureau of Navigation with the Steamboat Inspection Service in 1932) to form the U.S. Coast Guard as we know it today.

The men and women of today's U.S. Coast Guard patrol our shores, save lives, protect property and enhance the flow of commerce. Everyday, the nation's headlines bear witness to the magnificent works of our Guardsmen, to include activities as diverse as helping victims of natural disaster, stemming the flow of illegal drugs and teaching boating safety. At the same time, our Coast Guard remains uniquely qualified to provide that spectrum of peacetime services which evolve, in time of crisis, into wartime capability. As America's national security requirements continue to evolve, we can be sure that our Coast Guard will play a central role.

The year 2000 also commemorates the 50th anniversary of America's involvement in the Korean war. In that conflict, as it has in every other faced by our country, our U.S. Coast Guard answered the country's call to arms. In the years leading up to World War II, our U.S. Coast Guard advisors helped develop the Korean Coast Guard which, after that war, became the navy of the Republic of Korea. Coast Guard cutters served as weather stations throughout the war providing U.N. ground, naval and air forces with information on weather affecting military operations. In the ultimate sacrifice, five Coast Guardsmen also gave their lives during a rescue of the crew of a U.S. Navy reconnaissance plane in the China Sea.

USTRANSCOM'S Coast Guardsmen and women can stand tall and be proud of their great service to our country on this very special day. To your friends in USTRANSCOM, each of you will always epitomize the spirit and strength embodied in your motto, Semper Paratus --- Always Ready. Our sincerest thanks to you for your dedicated and outstanding service.
