NAPLES, Italy (USTCNS) --- MV Green Wave arrived last month at the port of Nordenham, Germany-after 'waiting' out a violent storm over the English Channel.
"The captain made a prudent decision in allowing the storm system to pass, said Deane Swickard from Military Sealift Command Northern Europe in Rotterdam. "Some commercial vessels which passed through the storm encountered damage." The storm system reportedly caused severe flooding in part of the United Kingdom.
Upon its arrival, cargo operations began around 2 p.m., starting with the discharge of breakbulk rockets and ammunition, and containerized ammunition bound for inland destinations in Germany.
Once all containers were off-loaded, the ship began loading a combination of war reserve, training and retro-grade ammunition bound for Sunny Point, N.C. Swickard said everything was done by 4:30 p.m., Nov. 12. The ship set sail almost immediately.
All together, more than 3,251 long tons of cargo was loaded and unloaded. The inbound cargo belongs to ammunition shipment 25; the outbound cargo was a combination of war reserve, training ammunition, and retro-grade ammunition.
"The operation went smooth," said Swickard, who was on-site for the operation. Along with Swickard were members of Military Traffic Management Command's 950th Transportation Company, based in nearby Bremerhaven.
Swickard also indicated the local stevedores at the port did an exceptional job in handling the delicate cargo.
MSCO Northern Europe routinely oversees ammunition lifts at the port of Nordenham. (FROM MILITARY SEALIFT COMMAND - EUROPE NEWSWIRE).
