SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (USTCNS) --- The 375th Comptroller Squadron has the right stuff.
The squadron's financial management skills have proven it to be the best of the best in the 2000 Air Mobility Command Comptroller Awards. The squadron grabbed top honors and was named the Financial Management and Comptroller Organization of the Year.
"We're the best in AMC," said Lt. Col. John Weidert, the 375th Comptroller Squadron commander. "It's based on everything we do in a given year."
In addition to the top award, the squadron also brought home Financial Analysis Office of the Year honors. Two squadron members also won individual awards in the AMC competition. Weidert won AMC Comptroller of the Year and Senior Airman Jess Houk captured the title of Financial Services Airman of
the Year.
"It's the Super Bowl for us," Weidert said. "The big deal is the organization of the year award. It shows the total team effort we have here."
The 375th Comptroller Squadron manages Scott's finances. Among its many tasks are managing the budget, handling both the military and civilian payrolls and processing TDY and PCS vouchers and payments. The two headquarters located at Scott increase the duties of the squadron, Weidert said. For example, the 375th Comptroller Squadron handles a much larger volume of TDY vouchers than most other bases, Weidert said.
The squadron commander is the first to admit that finances, though vital, are not as glamorous as other duties in the wing.
"At the wing level, we have a hard time competing with the life-and-death situations of the cops and the med group," Weidert said. "When we go to AMC and compete against other comptroller organizations, we can shine."
The 375th Comptroller Squadron won four of the 15 award categories it competed in. For the awards, the squadron competed against all of the other comptroller organizations in Air Mobility Command. The competition examines everything a comptroller organization does in the course of a fiscal year, from funds management to customer service.
