MacDill children golf with NFL stars
One youngster, Ashley Huff, even scored the ultimate prize: a pair of tickets to Sunday's Super Bowl XXXV by winning a putting competition during Golf Jam.
Sixteen children from the base wrote winning essays to play in this event. They were among the more than 200 children from the Tampa area chosen to participate.
"I want you guys to really take advantage of what's going on today and have a lot of fun, because this day is especially for you," said Terry Lazin, NFL Players Golf Club president and chief executive officer, to the children before the Golf Jam kickoff. "Forget about autographs for a minute and really try
to spend quality time with these players. They are here to show you their appreciation for doing a really good job."
Among the dozens of NFL players at the event present were two with prior military service, Chad Hennings of the Dallas Cowboys (Air Force) and Mike Anderson of the Denver Broncos (Marines).
Hennings is still in active reserve status.
The large, enthusiastic crowd was welcomed to the day's festivities with performances by the Air Force drill team, Tops in Blue singers and the Special Operations Command jump team.
On the overall event, Tech Sgt. Cynthia Williams, mother of essay winners Jacob and Joshua, said, "It was a unique experience for my children, because this will probably be the only chance to be surrounded by so many NFL players at one time." (FROM AIR MOBILITY COMMAND PUBLIC AFFAIRS).
