USTRANSCOM Army element announces contest to select a motto for new unit crest

SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (USTCNS) --- U.S. Transportation Command's Army element is seeking a motto for a unit crest through a contest it was announced here today.

According to Army Lt. Col. Reinaldo Morales, deputy commander of USTRANSCOM's Army element, the contest will select a motto for the crest worn on Class "A" uniforms and, for enlisted soldiers, on garrison caps.

"Members of a command look to a crest as a unifying symbol," said Morales. "We currently use the U.S. Army Garrison crest which is generic in nature and not attached to a specific unit."

Unit crests, known as distinctive unit insignia, are worn by members of units throughout the Army.

The contest is open to everyone and will run from Jan. 26 to Feb. 9, 2001.

Email entries should provide a motto in Latin or English, 26 characters or less as a Microsoft Word attachment. (If in Latin, provide English translation).

Entries will be judged based on the significance and symbolism of the motto. The motto must be relevant to the USTRANSCOM mission "To provide air, land, and sea transportation for the DOD, both in time of peace and time of war".
Email entries to the Army element at Reinaldo.Morales@hq.transcom.mil. Provide full name, daytime phone number and unit email address. All entries become the property of U.S. Transportation Command.

Army Lt. Gen. Daniel G. Brown, deputy commander in chief USTRANSCOM and commander of the Army element, will select the winning entry.

The person providing the winning entry will be officially recognized by the USTRANSCOM Chief of Staff. USTRANSCOM will notify the winner and will post the winning entry to the USTRANSCOM news page.
