DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. (USTCNS) --- Actresses and actors weren't lined up wearing Versace evening gowns and tuxedos. The event wasn't broadcast around the country to see who won best new picture.
But, the anticipation was just as great for wing commanders as they all gathered at the annual commander's conference at Andrews Air Force Base, Md., March 27, to name the best airlift wing in the 21st Air Force.
Maj. Gen. George N. Williams, 21st Air Force commander, McGuire AFB, N.J., was host of the evening's events and presented the Lt. Gen. Malcolm B. Armstrong Trophy to the newest, and first time recipient of the prestigious award - the 436th Airlift Wing.
"When General Williams announced that we had won the award, I was surprised, but very pleased," said Col. S. Taco Gilbert III, 436th Airlift Wing commander. "I think the Eagle Wing has done phenomenal work over this past year, but we have also had to face major challenges… I was very pleased Dover was able to capture this trophy in spite of the logistics challenges of the airplanes, and in spite of the ops tempo challenges we've had this year.
"From the contributions of the port mortuary to the medical group and all the initiative they put forth including medical care, TRICARE, and supporting beneficiaries to the ops group and the missions they've contributed to the logistics group who always come up with a way to make the mission, this award recognizes that this was in fact an entire wing effort," said Gilbert.
Criteria for the award include mission effectiveness, inspections and evaluations, personnel, infrastructure, safety, quality, competitions and awards, military and civilian education, public service and community relations.
The trophy is presented annually to recognize the three most outstanding units in 21st Air Force: one active duty, one Air National Guard unit and one to a Reserve unit within or gained by 21st Air Force. (FROM AIR MOBILITY COMMAND PUBLIC AFFAIRS).
