Remains from Pentagon arrive at Dover AFB

DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. (USTCNS) --- The remains of those killed in the attack of the Pentagon Sept. 11 have continued to arrive via a CH-47 Chinook helicopter at Dover Air Force Base and the Charles C. Carson Center for Mortuary Affairs here. The first of the remains arrived Sept. 13 at approximately 1:30 p.m.

The port mortuary, the largest in the Department of Defense, is preparing the remains as expeditiously as possible for return to next-of-kin and final burial arrangements, said Maj. Jon Anderson, 436th Airlift Wing chief of public Affairs.

Teams of specialist totaling more than 400 personnel, including up to 200 Air Force Reserve Command Port Mortuary reservists, have arrived to the base to assist with identification of the remains. Normal procedures include dental record checks, fingerprints and bone analysis. DNA samples are taken and forwarded to other facilities for evaluation.

The remains are being inspected, identified and prepared with the utmost dignity and respect by the mortuary professionals. While this is a sobering task these professionals do so in a manner that reflects the highest level of honor for the sacrifices these individuals made for this nation, Anderson said.
