USTRANSCOM's Army element dons new black beret
Led by Army Lt. Gen. Daniel Brown, deputy commander in chief, USTRANSCOM, and commander of its Army element, soldiers donned the black berets in the Seay auditorium.
He described the history of the black beret formerly in use by our tanker forces and by the Army Rangers and said that berets represented the Army's transformation into a 21st century force.
Brown also told his soldiers that the beret should be a reminder of the Army's core values of Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless-service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage.
Army Chief of Staff Gen. Eric Shinseki announced the inception of the use of the black beret in Oct. 2000. Army units worldwide began wearing the new beret earlier this year as supplies became available.
The beret is "symbolic of our commitment to transform this magnificent Army into a new force--a strategically responsive force for the 21st century. It will be a symbol of unity, a symbol of Army excellence, a symbol of our values," said Shinseki.
