USTRANSCOM calls nineteen soldiers to active duty
When President George W. Bush declared war on terrorism USTRANSCOM's operational tempo increased significantly, triggering additional manpower needs.
In response to USTRANSCOM's additional workload, JTRU began to mobilize reservists to handle additional requirements. Within 24 hours, three JTRU Reservists were dispatched to Joint Forces Command to support the USTRANSCOM liaison officer. Ten days later, other JTRU reservists were dispatched to U.S. Central Command and U.S. Pacific Command. Others were activated to support USTRANSCOM on site.
"Many of our members were already here on duty on other types of orders," said Navy Capt. Paula Bozdech-Veater, USTRANSCOM deputy director of reserve affairs. "Because of that, they were able to provide immediate support."
On a yearly average, JTRU provides USTRANSCOM with 30% of their watch standing personnel.
Reserve augmentation demands will continue to exceed supply, according to Air National Guard Brig Gen. Robert P. Meyer, Jr.
"JTRU members will focus on directorates' highest priorities and will coordinate the augmentation with reserve training," said Meyer. "That is our mission, and our challenge."
JTRU's Army element has been supporting USTRANSCOM since JTRU was first activated 10 years ago during the Gulf War.
