SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (USTNCS) --- In the weeks following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the U.S. Army mobilized Jeffrey H. Blackwood of O'Fallon, Ill. at U.S. Transportation Command in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

An Army lieutenant colonel, Blackwood serves in USTRANSCOM's Army element of Joint Transportation Reserve Unit, the first Department of Defense-authorized joint reserve unit.

Blackwood has been mobilized for a year and serves as chief of USTRANSCOM's Functional Data Base Management.

USTRANSCOM is also Blackwood's civilian employer, where he is employed as a transportation specialist. Blackwood served on active duty in the US Army for 7 years, and has more than 18 years in the Army Reserve.

One of things he likes about being mobilized is working with some of the finest people, representing all the services. He said his mobilization experience would enhance his civilian job skills.

"I mostly enjoy the opportunity to work with my fellow JTRU members, and some of the work I really enjoy," Blackwood said. "You stay busy, but you can't reflect on what's going on, what's not going on, and what one can do to influence the action. It's not going to be another Desert Storm, with a conventional battlefield and enemy. This is a global conflict with (a) carefully camouflaged enemy who uses, and is used, by governments to stay in power."

USTRANSCOM provides air, land, and sea transportation for the Department of Defense, both in time of peace and times of war. Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard (active and reserve) and Department of Defense civilian personnel staff the command.

JTRU was the first Department of Defense-authorized "joint" reserve unit. It was activated ten years ago to support USTRANSCOM's global transportation mission in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. JTRU provides USTRANSCOM with 30% of its watch standing workforce.
