SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (USTCNS) --- Following the terrorist attacks on the nation September 11, 2001, the U.S. Army mobilized Quincy, Illinois native Army Reserve Maj. Tim Scherrer in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Scherrer serves in the Army Element of the Joint Transportation Reserve Unit, U.S. Transportation Command, at Scott Air Force Base, Ill.

He has been mobilized for a year as a military intelligence officer at United States Transportation Command.

An assistant professor of military science (Army-ROTC) at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo., Scherrer has been in the Army Reserve for more than 14 years, and served at USTRANSCOM during Desert Storm for 8 months.

"I like being a part of something very important to the future of our nation," said Scherrer. "I very much appreciate the support of the American people for our military."

"Early on in this operation, and even today, we definitely feel like we are truly defending our country. We have always said that, but this time the threat is more direct and personal," Scherrer said. "I am proud to serve the Army and the country in this time of need. This is why we serve in the reserves."

USTRANSCOM provides air, land, and sea transportation for the Department of Defense, both in time of peace and times of war. Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard (active and reserve) and Department of Defense civilian personnel staff the command.

JTRU was the first Department of Defense-authorized "joint" reserve unit. It was activated ten years ago to support USTRANSCOM's global transportation mission in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. JTRU provides USTRANSCOM with 30% of its watch standing workforce.
