SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (USTCNS) --- The U.S. Coast Guard Reserve mobilized reservist Lt. Cmdr. Kenneth Hines of Columbia, Mo., to serve at U.S. Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM) here.

Hines temporarily set aside his civilian duties as Columbia's assistant fire chief to assume the duties of Joint Intelligence Center Watch Officer at United States at USTRANSCOM.

Hines drills with USTRANSCOM's Joint Transportation Reserve Unit at Scott Air Force Base, Ill.

He said he feels badly about leaving the Columbia Fire Department short handed because seasoned fire officers are hard to replace. However, he feels what he's doing now is important, and necessary.

"It would be tough to sit at home, seeing other military members being called up and contributing, and not be included," Hines said.

USTRANSCOM provides air, land, and sea transportation for the Department of Defense, both in time of peace and times of war. Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard (active and reserve) and Department of Defense civilian personnel staff the command.

JTRU was the first Department of Defense-authorized "joint" reserve unit. It provides USTRANSCOM with 30% of its watch standing workforce.
