ALEXANDRIA, Va. (USTCNS) --- Two Army Reserve officers who met while on duty now have something else in common.
Both officers are commanders of Army Reserve transportation units supporting the Military Traffic Management Command.
Lt. Col. Vernon Greene assumed command of the 1181st Transportation Terminal Battalion, Meridian, Miss., on March 3. Greene is married to Col. Ellen Greene, commander of the 1190th Deployment Support Brigade, Baton Rouge, La.
"Colonel Ellen Greene and Lieutenant Colonel Vernon Greene are a one-of-a-kind couple within MTMC," said Brig. Gen. Harry Philips, MTMC's deputy commander for Mobilization, himself a former commander of the 1190th.
The Greenes met while both were serving in the Army Reserves at the 1192nd Transportation Terminal Brigade, New Orleans, La. The two were married Aug. 25, 1990. They returned home after their wedding reception to find orders for Desert Shield in the mailbox. Although driven and hard charging, the two commanders say they are a lot like other families when it comes to sharing household responsibilities.
"He does the bills," said Col. Greene, "and I take care of the shopping and the house."
The two say they often can provide suggestions and encouragement to each other as they perform in demanding Army Reserve duty positions.
"We usually provide a different perspective to the situation and we are each other's sounding board," said Col. Greene. "I usually take more of a civilian business approach to the problem, while Vern views the problem from more of a military perspective. This helps us both."
In addition to command duties, the two are busy right now with military schooling. Col. Greene is completing the U.S. Army War College this summer. Lt. Col. Greene is completing the Joint Maritime Operations course of the Naval War College.
Lt. Col. Greene is anxious to begin command of the 1181st -- MTMC's first Reserve unit deployed for the Gulf War.
His goal is straightforward: Ensuring that the unit can execute its wartime mission through motivated, competent and courageous soldiering.
"Our charters as soldiers mandate that we be mission-ready, soldier-ready and family-ready," said Lt. Col. Greene. "As commander, I am personally charged to ensure these three elements are completely synchronized and that readiness in sum total remains as our number-one goal."
Lt. Col. Greene is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and earned a master's degree in hazardous waste management. He is employed by Lockheed Martin Space Systems Co., Michoud Operations, New Orleans, La.
Col. Greene is employed by Entergy Solutions, Ltd.
