ALEXANDRIA, Va., (USTCNS, April 15, 2005) --- The commander of the Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC) pinned on a second star at a promotion ceremony held here today.
Brig. Gen Charles W. Fletcher, Jr. was promoted to the rank of major general by Gen. John Handy, commander, U.S. Transportation Command.
Fletcher has been the commander of SDDC since August 2004.
An estimated group of nearly 300 people gathered at the AMC Hoffman Theater complex in Alexandria to witness the event. The Air Force Brass Quintet of Bolling Air Force Base, Washington, D.C., conducted by Senior Master Sgt. Robert Connally, provided the entertainment.
In traditional Army fanfare the ceremony began with the arrival of the official party and the posting of the colors by the Joint Armed Forces Color Guard of the Military District of Washington. SDDCs Sgt. 1st Class Konchetta Bringier, G1/4 (personnel and logistics), sang The Star-Spangled Banner.
During his remarks Handy spoke to some of the accomplishments of Maj. Gen. Fletchers tenure thus far in his SDDC assignment.
Six million short tons. Thats 20 freight trains fully loaded, spread from New York to Los Angeles. That is an incredible endeavor. And all that moved safely and without incident halfway around the world and back again.
When you look at six million short tons of cargo, and I cant even imagine what that isif you look at 2.3 million people move, that, too, is beyond imagination.
Charlie is one of those remarkable people of whom we could stand here and talk about all of his accomplishments in his Army careera remarkable man with a remarkable family, said Handy. Hes the person that we (USTRANSCOM) rely on to get things done. And this command is really and truly blessed.
Pinning on the two-star rank was a unique family affair. Fletchers wife, Dale Anne, assisted Gen. Handy in the pinning of rank onto Fletchers military dress uniform. Sons Charles and Michael slid the new two-star insignias onto his shirt epaulettes, and daughter Marie attached the two-star rank to Fletchers beret.
After the promotion, Fletcher unfurled his personal flag. The significance of which is, throughout the history of warfare, a general officers personal flag symbolized leadership on the battlefield. The personal flag represents a general officers branch of service and rank, and is presented at all military functions and is displayed in the office of the general.
Addressing the audience, Fletcher personally recognized many and thanked all for being present for such a great day for the Fletcher family.
I am here today because of what a lot of you out there did, and I recognize that, he said.
I am truly honored and I want to thank you all, Fletcher said.
The mission of the SDDC is to provide global surface deployment command and control and distribution operations to meet National Security objectives in peace and war. SDDC is the Warfighter's single surface deployment/distribution provider for adaptive and flexible solutions that deliver capability and sustainment on time.
