Employers visit Texas port to learn about the Defense Transportation System
The Bosslift program is a Department of Defense (DoD) initiative that honors the employers and supervisors of National Guard and Reserve members by transporting them to military training sites where they observe Reservist members on duty as part of Americas Total Force.
USTRANSCOMs reliance on the reserves has increased dramatically since the events of 9/11. In 2001, Reservists contributed more than 13,000 days worth of support to USTRANSCOM. By the end of September 2005, that number had risen to more than 34,000 days.
USTRANSCOM provides air, land, and sea transportation for the DoD during peace and war. The 253 members of the JTRU provide USTRANSCOM with the highly skilled personnel it needs from the Reserve components of all the services.
The Bosslift began with a flight from here to Corpus Christi onboard the recently retired Air Force Two, a C-9 aircraft that was the official aircraft of the First Lady, until it was transferred to the Air Force Reserves 932nd Airlift Wing. The aircrew for the Bosslift showed the employers the same first class service they provide their usual passengers U.S. senators and representatives.
When the group arrived, they were taken on a tour of the Port of Corpus Christi, one of 19 DoD-designated Strategic Military Deployment Seaports. Conducting the tour were members of the Army Reserves 1395th Transportation Terminal Brigade (TTB), part of Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command a component command of USTRANSCOM. The 1395th TTB was mobilized in November 2004 and has since been at the Port of Corpus Christi moving military cargo.
The Illinois Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve hosted a luncheon for the employers, after which the U.S. Coast Guard conducted a demonstration of the speed and agility of their 22-foot long Rigid Hull Inflatable Safeboats employed for port security.
The groups final stop before departing was Coast Guard Air Station Corpus Christi, where they saw displays of the HH-65A "Dolphin" helicopter and the HU-25B Falcon jet.
