USTRANSCOM servicemembers visit Rams training camp

SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. - The St. Louis Rams invited service men and women from U.S. Transportation Command here as honored guests recently at the team's training facility in Earth City, Mo.

The visitors had the opportunity to watch the Aug. 10 scripted practice, as Rams coaches led the players through individual, group and team drills. A large countdown timer kept the awareness of tempo high and sounded a horn for each new drill.

The military from USTRANSCOM gave the experience great reviews.

"It was interesting to see that playing football is a lot like our jobs. Professional football is more organized than I thought," said Seaman Apprentice Quen Wimes.

Chief Master Sgt. Ken McQuiston, USTRANSCOM's senior enlisted leader, agreed.

"It was a great opportunity for us to see first-hand how the NFL operates a team," he said, "which is not much different from how we operate."

After watching the spirited hour-and-a-half practice, the 10 USTRANSCOM visitors met with Rams players, including star wide receiver Donnie Avery and starting quarterback Mark Bulger, who signed autographs and offered thanks and encouragement.

Bulger supports men and women in uniform. Last year, he, local radio personality Dave Glover and Rocky Sickmann spearheaded a $300,000 renovation for the James S. McDonnell USO at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport. Sickmann was one of 52 Americans taken hostage at in 1979 at the U.S. Embassy in Iran. The renovated facility opened in June and continues to serve as a home away from home for military and their families, as it has for nearly three decades.
