Command celebrates beginning of GATES/WPS convergence

SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. - On Dec. 14, 2010, Gen. Duncan J. McNabb, commander, U.S. Transportation Command, hosted the Global Air Transportation Execution System and Worldwide Port System convergence cut-over and retirement celebration here.

McNabb thanked the members of the joint team who worked the last four years to successfully field the first GATES/WPS convergence operating capability in November at the 832d Transportation Battalion, Jacksonville, Fla. This milestone paves the way for GATES to operate globally and the retirement of WPS.

The joint team achieved success by executing an integrated master schedule using a two-phased approach. Phase One focused on GATES supporting the Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command headquarters-level functionality completed in November 2008, and Phase Two, now under way, focuses on GATES SDDC ocean terminal capability and is scheduled for completion in September 2011.

Team members conducted joint application development sessions to capture operator requirements, gain input from SDDC subject matter experts and note any improvements. They managed more than 50 information technology interfaces while working additional high-visibility enterprise requirements outside the convergence and maintaining three software development cycles. This ensured the work of port operators remained uninterrupted and responsive to daily operations.

The final GATES capability will enable joint distribution and expeditionary logistics such as Joint Task Force Port Opening, phase out functional silos and provide a single port processing and manifesting system for the Department of Defense at significant cost savings.
