SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. – “Mentorship and written feedback are extremely important, and all leaders should increase their focus on these tasks,” said Army Lt. Gen. Kathleen M. Gainey, deputy commander, U.S. Transportation Command, in remarks to Winning Women as part of its monthly speaker’s series Monday afternoon.

In her remarks to this local organization that promotes women in business, education, government and health initiatives to advance regional economic growth, Gainey explained the mission of USTRANSCOM and shared five tools for successful leadership. These include having a clear vision that drives action; instilling a culture of teamwork and collaboration; embracing empowerment and creating opportunities for people to take initiative; treating all people with respect and dignity, hearing all voices and allowing everyone the opportunity to make a difference; and setting a positive tone.

Michelle Esswein, founder, president, and CEO of Winning Women, said Winning Women focuses on finding top-notch speakers to meet with their members and share their stories. “General Gainey was an excellent choice because she is an inspiring example of both leadership and success.”

Esswein continued, “Her remarks helped us better understand the role USTRANSCOM plays in the Department of Defense and inspired us to achieve our highest potential as leaders. Her tips will help all of us as we work to empower the next generation of women leaders and advance economic growth in the greater St. Louis region.”
